Frequently Asked Questions
1. Where do the Turtles race?
The Turtles race at Riverside Park. They are released at the railway bridge and float down the South Thompson River to the finish line strung up at the Pier. It’s a sprint to the finish that’s typically approximately 10-15 minutes per race (depending on the wind!).
2. Is there any age restriction to play?
You must be 19+ to play. All ages are welcome to join us for Race Day festivities.
3. Are we racing live turtles?
No! These turtles have been created from environmentally safe plastics and are not in any way damaging to the environment. At the end of the race boaters and kayakers collect all of the racing turtles.
4. How do I know if my turtle is a winner?
The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placing turtles in both races will be announced at Riverside Park on race day. Don’t worry if you can’t make Race Day—we’ll contact all the winners to let them know. In the event of a discrepancy, a fourth-place turtle will be drawn and used to replace any disqualified turtle.
5. Can I volunteer to help support the turtle race?
We’re always looking for support to sell tickets and help out on Race Day. We also need assistance escorting the turtles down the river, so if you canoe or kayak, we would love to hear from you! To find out more and/or volunteer, please contact Danica at events@kbia.ca with any questions.
6. What happens on race day?
Race Day is a free, family friendly event, with entertainment. All ages are welcome! Join us on the beach at Riverside Park on Saturday, May 7, 2023 from noon to 3pm to cheer-on the Turtles as they race on the current down the South Thompson River from the railway bridge to the pier – great prizes up for grabs!
Come down for a BBQ and other booths along side the river. Proceeds from the BBQ go to KBIA.
